Canterbury's Next Chapter: Apartments
Downtown Inn Will Make Switch In March
The Capital Times, January 31, 2006

by Judith Davidoff

Visiting scholars and frequent visitors to Madison are the customers the owners of the Canterbury Inn hope to attract when they turn their luxury hotel rooms into downtown apartments.

"It would also be very lovely for a graduate student," manager Virginia Evangelist said this morning. "It's extremely quiet and very beautiful. It gives such a sense of peace."

Trudy Barash, owner of the defunct Canterbury Booksellers Coffeehouse, opened the Canterbury Inn at 315 W. Gorham St. in 1993 on the second floor of the bookstore.

The inn was known for its luxurious rooms, each of which features a mural depicting a different character from Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales." The rooms have whirlpool baths, built-in bookshelves and damask bedding and ranged from $130 to $375 a night on special event weekends.

Evangelist said the apartments will be leased by the semester or year, and the rent would be "comparable to other downtown rentals."

She referred questions on the timing of the inn's transformation to Barash, who is in California and could not be reached for comment.

In a news release announcing the new apartments, however, the owners of the inn noted that the conversion follows a trend in such cities as New York and San Francisco of turning hotels into apartments or condominiums.

The inn will continue to operate as a hotel until Sunday, March 5, and Evangelist urged customers with gift certificates to redeem them by then.

Evangelist said not much renovation is planned for the apartments, outside of installation of a small stove.

She said the apartments will be fully furnished and come stocked with linens and dishes. Renters will have access to a shared laundry room and several common areas, including a large parlor, dining room and desk area.

"It will be a nice, friendly sort of arrangement," she said.
